The Effects Piano Lessons Have on Your Child (Scientifically Proven)

Why are piano lessons so important?

Many parents are eager to enroll their children into music lessons at a young age and are constantly looking for the best music school around them. But why? We are sure both parents and students wonder about what effects music lessons have and why it is such a popular trend among parents. It turns out music lessons does way more than just developing musical skill. They also have an incredible effect in children development, cognitively and emotionally.

THE STUDY: Effect of Music on Children’s Brains

The University of Vermont College of Medicine found that even the slightest exposure to music made a major difference in a child’s brain and provided many benefits to their developmental process. Here is how the study went:

“James Hudziak and his colleagues analyzed the brain scans of 232 children ages 6 to 18, looking for relationships between cortical thickness and musical training. Previous studies the team had performed revealed that anxiety, depression, attention problems and aggression correspond with changes to cortical thickness. Hudziak and his team sought to discover whether a ‘positive activity’ like musical training could affect the opposite changes in young minds.

‘What we found was the more a child trained on an instrument,’ Hudziak told the Washington Post, ‘it accelerated cortical organization in attention skill, anxiety management and emotional control.’

The study found increased thickness in parts of the brain responsible for executive functioning, which includes working memory, attentional control and organizational skills. In short, music actually helped kids become more well-rounded. Not only that, they believe that musical training could serve as a powerful treatment of cognitive disorders like ADHD.”

Why is this important to our world as a whole?

Through this study, researchers were able to conclude that music education can be a very powerful tool in upgrading children cognitive abilities and increasing academic success, furthermore closing the gaps between children who are categorized as “below average” and “average.” Schools that do not implement musical activities into their curriculum are losing so much potential in bettering their quality of education for their students and are not providing the opportunities for better success.

Hudziak’s study at The University of Vermont College of Medicine is definitely a crucial discovery that proves music improves children’s quality of life and not only does it better their musical talents but also their education as well, which is important considering the future of our generations rest in their hands.
