Making Music Rhythm Puzzles

Materials:

  • Lots of A4 paper (white or colored)

  • Scissors

  • Pencil

  • A marker

  • A circle template

LEVEL ONE: Using Ta-a (half notes), Ta & Titi (quarter notes).

1. Trace a circle on each of your pieces of paper. 

2. Minimum of 6 circles. But more would be better.

3. Cut out the circles.

4. eave one whole, fold some evenly in half, some quarters & some in eighths.

5. Draw a whole note (Ta-a-a-a) on the circle you have not folded.

6. Fold a circle in half and draw a 'half note' (Ta-a) in each segment.

7. Fold a circle into quarters and draw a 'quarter note' (Ta) in each segment.

8. Fold a circle into eighths and draw 2 x eighth notes (Titis) over two eighths, that is over one quarter.

9. Cut the half and quarter notes.

10. Cut eighth notes into quarter pieces.

11. Create circles using different combinations of half and quarter notes.

How many different puzzles can you create? You may need to repeat steps 1 to 12 if you need more puzzle pieces.

LEVEL TWO: Using Ta-a (half notes), Ta (quarter notes), Titi (eighth notes) and Sah (quarter rest)

1. Cut a few more circles.

2. Fold into quarters and draw sahs in each segment.

3. Create many more DIFFERENT puzzles using one or more sahs in the circle.



LEVEL THREE: Using Ta-a (half notes), Ta (quarter notes), Titi (eighth notes) Sah (quarter rest) and Tika tikas (sixteenth notes)

1. Cut more circles, fold into eighths, draw Tika Tikas.

LEVEL FOUR: Using Ta-a (half notes), Ta (quarter notes), Titi (eighth notes) Sah (quarter rest) Tika tikas ( sixteenth notes) & TiSi

1. Cut more circles. Fold into eighths and draw a Ti in some & a Si in others.

2. Either cut circles into quarters or eighths or both.

3. Create many more puzzle combinations. 

Optional Extension Challenge: 

Try to use the rhythms: TiTika & TikaTi if you can, or even SiTika or TikaSi!
