Music Is Food for the Soul, but Is It Food for Plants?

Due to the global pandemic, major changes can be seen throughout the world as people are being stuck in quarantine. One specific trend that seems to be popular is the mass-purchasing of plants to decorate their indoors during lockdown. Since the stay-at-home order, plant stores have been receiving a huge increase in sales due to people raving about sprucing up their place and bringing the outdoors inside their homes.

If you are one of these mass-plant-buying people, I am sure you are looking for ways to keep your plants alive and apart from regular waterings and providing enough light, your plants can thrive through the help of music.

HOW DOES MUSIC AFFECT PLANT GROWTH?

Throughout time, many studies revealed that plants exposed to music were significantly healthier than plants that were not. Music can help plants thrive and ensure that they live long, luscious lives. A study in 1962 (one of the earliest studies conducted) by Dr. Singh at Annamalai University showed that plants exposed to classical music had a 20% increase in growth compared to the group that was not exposed to any music at all. This same study was also done on crops, which showed a 25% to 60% increase in growth. Another study by researcher Dorothy Retallack at Colorado Women’s College showed plants exposed to an extended F note to be much healthier than the control group with no exposure to music.

REASONS WHY MUSIC CAN HELP PLANT GROWTH

Although there is no scientific explanation to why music helps plant growth, researchers believe that the vibration of the sound waves may be the contributor to the plants ability to thrive and flourish. The vibrations may be helping the stimulation to the plant’s cytoplasmic streaming, which is similar to the human’s version of blood flow and with increased stimulation, the nutrients in plants are able to travel throughout the whole body of the plant faster, resulting in faster plant growth.

FINDING THE BEST MUSIC FOR YOUR PLANTS

Throughout studies, classical music can be evidently seen to be the most effective on increasing plant health. The combination of different instruments such as piano, flute, violin, and more seem to help stimulating plant growth and seem to almost feed the plants in an inexplainable way. If you are looking for classical music to help feed your plant’s happiness, you can find recordings by our talented instructors on our Klassik Arts’s Youtube channel. We believe music is food for the soul, and it is patent that it is food for plants too.
